Description

Local writer Hock Tjoa will perform acclaimed author Vanessa Hua's "The Older the Ginger," which tells the story of a 70 year-old Chinese immigrant who is summoned by his mother to return to his village to find a bride, on Saturday, January 21 at 2pm at the Open Boo, 671 Maltman Drive. $10 tickets will be available at the door and in advance.

Hua, award-winning author and columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, included “The Older the Ginger” in her short story collection, Deceit and Other Possibilities. In 2017, she became the Featured Literary Artist at APAture, an Asian American arts festival in San Francisco, and her short story collection is El Cerrito's pick for One City, One Book.

Tjoa first performed this reading at Sacramento's Stories for the Stage on June 30, 2017. For years, he has been active in local community theater and Sierra Writers author events and recently published The Battle of Chibi, which vividly retells selections (translated by Tjoa) from the great Chinese classic, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Proceeds will benefit the Sierra Writers' Young Writers Competition. For more information, please visit sierrawriters.org.

Light refreshment will be available for purchase during the event.
